The Mercator Telescope
|
The Mercator Telescope is a 1.2 m semi-robotic telescope located at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory on La Palma Island (Canary Islands, Spain). It is operated by the staff of the Institute of Astronomy, University of Leuven (Belgium), in collaboration with the Observatory of Geneva (Switzerland). The telescope's name comes from the famous Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator (1512-1594), who studied and taught at the University of Leuven before moving to Duisburg (Germany). Enjoy a virtual tour of the telescope dome. Latest NewsFast core rotation in red-giant stars was found by KU Leuven astronomers, using high-precision photometry from the Kepler satellite and supporting ground-based spectroscopy with HERMES at the Mercator Telescope. The Fried Egg Nebula was identified as a rare yellow hypergiant using HERMES at the Mercator Telescope. (See also ESO press release)
